Rick Riordan Biography Early Life and Career
Rick Riordan was born Richard Russell Riordan Jr. on June 5, 1964, in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up in a family of teachers, and his love of reading and writing began at a young age. After graduating from Alamo Heights High School, Riordan attended North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) for two years before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated from UT Austin with bachelor’s degrees in history and English, and then received his teaching certification from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Riordan taught English and social studies at public and private middle schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Texas for fifteen years. During this time, he also began writing mystery novels for adults. His first book, Big Red Tequila, was published in 1997. He went on to write six more books in the Tres Navarre mystery series.
